Technical Services Round Table
Progress Report, October 2002

So far this year, the round table has co-sponsored two three-day training sessions on creating and submitting name authority records and a Fall Workshop session on cataloging rule changes. Thirty three people attended the two workshops in Logan and Salt Lake City in August & September to learn how to contribute authority records for names and places to the Library of Congress Name Authority File used by libraries worldwide. The workshops were presented by Rachel Wadham, a certified NACO trainer and Name-Authorities Librarian/NACO Coordinator at BYU. In the first month following the training, attendees contributed 66 name authority records via the newly formed Mountain West NACO Funnel, with Rachel Wadham serving as NACO Funnel Coordinator. Formation of this funnel was initiated by the ULA Technical Services Round Table this summer. The funnel allows Utah libraries to contribute & share new headings, especially those of regional importance, for use in cataloging records. Once headings appear in the Name Authority File, they are available for use by libraries worldwide.

The ten libraries currently participating in the Mountain West NACO Funnel are: Church History Library of the LDS Church, North Logan City Library, OSHA County Technical Center, Southern Utah University, State Library of Utah, Summit County Public Library System, Utah State University, Weber County Public Library System, Weber State University. In addition to ULA, co-sponsors of the two workshops included Utah State University, University of Utah, State Library of Utah, and Brigham Young University.

Slate of round table officers for next year: Rachel Wadham (Chair); Erminia Chao (Vice-Chair/Chair Elect); members at large: Marcia Cheney, Monyee Yip, Catherine McIntyre.
