Library Instruction Round Table
Minutes, October 11, 2002


Attending: Hildy Benham, Claire Hamasu, Carol Hansen, Jeanne Le Ber, Cheryl Mansen and Liz Workman

Agenda:
  1. ULA conference programs for May 2003 need to be submitted by November 15, 2002 - so we need to talk about ideas for programs.
    1. we would like to encourage instruction folks to consider submitting posters for the meeting
    2. Hildy is attending the Web University Conference in Chicago October 21-22 -- she may come back with some ideas.
    3. c. Richard Eissinger from SUU have a program idea related to "teaching the information literacy required course at SUU"
      1. ACTION: Jeanne contacted Richard by email to support the program
    4. Ann Goebel suggested looking at consumer health or business resources; or how to reach the unreachable freshman; or how to bring the library back into student focus as a resource with more than just books.
    5. use of Google - how come library search engines aren't more like Google?
    6. Present with technology group?
    7. A panel discussion -- your most effective "hot techniques" for teaching (like opening a 2nd window; reference tools and sources are being lost; student as teacher; critical thinking skills; fuzzy searching -- in other words no need for controlled vocabulary. Talk the students language.

  3. Report of our Fall Workshop participation.
    1. LIRT presented a poster (The Greening of the Eccles Health Sciences Library)
    2. LIRT presented a program (Environmental Toxins: Resources that could save your life) -- about 12 people attended this session.
    3. the workshop have fairly good attendance -- about 50

  4. Bring your list of favorite instruction website; we will create a Web page that includes our combined annotated lists.
    1. Carol reminded us that the Internet Navigator has a faculty section that lists favored websites.
    2. Jeanne will create a simple web page for ULA that provides links to each institutions instruction web page.

  5. Print "brochure"
    1. the group liked the idea and said to go ahead and spend $50 to get a bookmark printed.
The next meeting will be November 11 at Eccles at 4:00 p.m.
