Genealogical research has become a field of scholarship with rigorous research and             academic standards. Students in the Family History Program will learn skills that will distinguish them in the field of             genealogical research. The program is designed to train students in research, historicism, deductive reasoning, and             communication. It will prepare students for successful careers in the field of Family History.

Family History-Genealogy Certificate
            The BYU Family History (Genealogy) Certificate Program is designed for those who do not desire to complete all of the             requirements for a degree in history or are unable to return to campus to do so. The Certificate Program provides a solid             background in fundamental genealogical training in a particular geographical area.             Genealogy and Family History Certificate Program
             
Suited to those interested in researching their own family, this nine-month noncredit program may also be useful for             teachers, librarians, amateur researchers, and others. The program is jointly sponsored by the School of Library and             Information Science and the Department of History. Participants examine such topics as the migration of ethnic groups,             the changing family, population shifts, and comparisons of urban and rural lifestyles.

            Genealogical Studies Certificates
            The Professional Learning Centre, in partnership with the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, offers several             certificates in Genealogical Studies for amateur family historians and aspiring professional genealogists. All courses are             offered via the web. Specialist certificates are available for the records of the following countries: Canada, United States,             England, Ireland, Scotland, and Germany. In addition there is a Certificate in Genealogical Studies – Librarianship.
