Genealogist and Librarian Honored: Jim B. Parker

Jim B. Parker, former manager of the Family History Library, has been selected as one of two recipients of the Utah Library Association Special Services to Libraries Award for the year 2000.

Mr. Parker retired from the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1 December 1999 after thirty-six and one half years. During this time, he held many titles, including researcher, editor, special projects manager, accreditation coordinator and Correspondence Unit supervisor.

As library manager, Jim directed a staff of 600 employees and volunteers, and monitored a collection of more than three million books, microfilm, and microfiche. He was known for being diligent and thorough in his work. Jim has a great interest in genealogy, and has a unique ability to bring both LDS Church members and those of other faiths together in the cause of family history.

Jim has written and lectured on family history subjects. He has many friends and associates in archival circles, genealogical groups, American Indian associations, and with government officials. An Accredited Researcher, he has the reputation of being one of the best U.S. area researchers, with additional skills in Canadian and American Indian research.
