Can you hear me when I talk? Steve Law: I didn't hear anything. Janet Seegmiller: I can't hear myself. I'll see what's happening. Linda St Clair: Are there nominations for vice chair? Russell Lynch: If Howard is willing to serve, I think he would do very well and we would benefit from having him represent BYU. Susan Roberts: yes Greg Hatch: Yes Steve Law: I have considered nominating Emily Schultz, who is managing cataloging operations here at the Family History Library. P.S. Nola is here with me. Steve Law: I'm sure that either one would work out fine. Nola believes that Emily has been on the committee previously, I think she's right but I don't know the details. Steve Law: I have no idea. She has told me she wants to get involved again, but she just had a baby last month ... but then this wouldn't be until next year. Steve Law: Sounds like a good plan. I'll go ahead and talk to her next week (I believe she's not here today). Steve Law: Perhaps I'll call her at home today. Steve Law: Sounds good. Steve Law: Nola says you'd have to be off the committee for a year before being on the committee again. What are the details on this in the bylaws? Steve Law: How about Jill Waring-Greatorex Linda St Clair: So looks like Emily for vice chair and Jill as secretary. I'll confirm the acceptance if that is the case. Janet Seegmiller: Go for it. Steve Law: Ask linda if she wants to continue first Linda St Clair: Nominations for members at large. We have had 4 member. Linda St Clair: opps members at large Steve Law: How many members at large are vacant? Linda St Clair: I was expecting Joe Everett to join us also, but perhaps something came up. Steve Law: Nola would like to suggest Steve Decker. Steve Law: Has Connie Lamb been on the committee before? Steve Law: Sounds good. Steve Law: Just a note. I don't see Vivian on the ULA directory. Steve Law: Nola is suggesting Vivian Milius (Springville?) as member at large. Steve Law: She's never been on the committee, but she has been a member of the round table. Steve Law: They wouldn't have to be a current member, just be member next year, correct? Janet Seegmiller: Is the ULA directory online? (I should know, but don't) I'd like to see who are members in So. Utah Janet Seegmiller: Thanks. Steve Law: Can we state exactly what we're proposing? Steve Law: Steve Decker, Vivian Milius, and Howard Bybee are the nominations for MatL? Linda St Clair: To conclude, Steve Deck, Vivian Millus, Howard Bybee, Connie Lamb, and Robin Reid are nominations for M at L. Steve Law: So we have 5 candidates for 3 positions? Do we need additional backups in case some of them say no? Nola suggests Ray Matthews (State Library) and I could suggest Mary Hill (Family History Library) as additional possibilities? Joe Everett: Hi, sorry I'm late. Joe Everett: Thanks! Joe Everett: I can hear you, but I don't have a microphone. Joe Everett: I will read through it all. Joe Everett: I don't have anyone in mind. Those are some good names. Linda St Clair: Thank you for your assistance with this. Shall we close nominations now? Steve Law: Nola seconds it. Linda St Clair: Thnka you Janet and Nola. Steve Law: Nola says that it is fine with regard to the bylaws. Steve Law: ...and it is a good idea. Janet Seegmiller: How many liaisons do we have now? Joe Everett: I would be willing to share news, and answer whatever questions the committee has about Ancestry (as much as I can share, that is.) :) Joe Everett: I would recommend that we get a librarian as an FHL liason. Tracie is not one. Joe Everett: If not a librarian, I would recommend one of the FHL managers. Joe Everett: OK Steve Law: How about Ray Wright? Joe Everett: Ray is very busy, but I think he would be willing. He probably wouldn't be able to make many meetings, but he could be a point of contact. Steve Law: Ray is the Manager currently of the Family History Library and has been heavily involved in the past with the Genealogy RT for ALA. He is not currently a member of ULA and I don't know if he has the interest, but he'd be good. Joe Everett: I think we should invite Ray, and then he could recommend someone from the library to serve. Steve Law: Nola suggests that these liaisons in the past would simply come in, state what they wanted to contribute and then leave ... so perhaps that would be doable? Steve Law: sound fine. Steve Law: I can do that if you'd like. Joe Everett: I was going to suggest Linda contact Ray, but as Vice-Chair and someone who knows Ray, Steve would also be good. Joe Everett: Sounds good. Joe Everett: One possibility would be for Russ to have a dual role as liason for the FHL and FGS, perhaps Steve could suggest that to Ray, should ray decline. Steve Law: yes Joe Everett: Sure. Joe Everett: In general, I agree with Linda and Steve's email suggestions that we focus on topics that relate to librarians serving genealogists, rather than how-to genealogy topics. Steve Law: Who has already been asked to present at the conference? Janet Seegmiller: I am wondering if there is concern about lower than usual attendance bec. the meeting is in St. George? Steve Law: I like the joint LIRT and GENRT proprosal idea. Steve Law: Nola says that in the past a former SLCounty director discouraged traveling that far for the conference--but it would be much less of an issue today. Joe Everett: Sorry, I had someone come ask me a question. Joe Everett: About an Ancestry topic... Steve Law: Nola says that a lot of her colleagues want to go. Joe Everett: I think there would be interest among librarians in learning about Ancestry Library Edition and what it has to offer. Joe Everett: I know a couple of people who could present. Suzanne Russo Adams or Beau Sharbrough. Joe Everett: I would also be willing, although I would rather see if one of them would be willing first. Joe Everett: Sure. Joe Everett: Could you email me with a description of the topic suggested for Beau? Joe Everett: Also, before my interruption, you were talking about Mike Hunter's concern about proposals being turned down, and the embarrasment of those proposals being solicited. Did you guys come up with a resolution for that concern. Joe Everett: So, rather than asking Suzanne and Beau to give a presentation, I probably should invite them to submit a proposal, so that they understand that it is tentative. Joe Everett: Yes, I am quite sure that Ancestry would pay to send them down there. Joe Everett: I think they would definitely prefer to present separately. Joe Everett: I think Suzanne would be better for the Ancestry Library Edition topic and Beau for the other. Steve Law: What is "the other" Joe Everett: He is also the former head of Gentech. Steve Law: I've seen his presentations, and I believe that Suzanne's on what Ancestry has to offer would be more relevant. Joe Everett: That is probably true. Steve Law: I agree. Russell Lynch: I've been back for a few minutes and I know Suzanne can do a great job. Joe Everett: I will talk to her. Joe Everett: And I will suggest Beau as an alternate, and me as a backup if neither of them is able to do it. Joe Everett: No you aren't rushing things. I was just going to make another suggestion, but I'll wait while we talk about this topic. Steve Law: What were our earlier suggestions for presentations (last meeting)? Steve Law: Idaho, I believe. Joe Everett: What was her name again? Russell Lynch: I think she lives in Washington state, and I suspect Cyndi would expect an honorarium. Joe Everett: Cyndi is in Tacoma, Wash. Steve Law: Nola says if we do it as a pre-conference we'd have money available? Steve Law: I meant post-conference. The money would come from ULA not GENRT. Steve Law: Yes. Please talk to her about this. Russell Lynch: Cyndi is coming to BYU in March 2006 for their conference. Russell Lynch: I don't know if we need her at ULA also in May 2006. Russell Lynch: I'm pretty sure the BYU Computerized Genealogy Conf. is in March. Steve Law: I'm searching for Cyndi's schedule on the internet. Steve Law: Postpone what exactly? Steve Law: You're going to check with Hickman about a postconference, but what are you postponing? Steve Law: Yes. The conference attendees don't overlap very much. Steve Law: Cyndi's website shows her scheduled for two presentations in January 2006 but there's nothing else there. The Tacoma-Pierce Genealogical Society and the Washington State Library. Joe Everett: I need to go. Bye everyone! Joe Everett: I wondered if Newsbank would send Tom Kemp. Joe Everett: He has a new position there, and might want to talk about what Newsbank intends to do with genealogy. Steve Law: That's a good idea. Joe Everett: I'd like to know. Joe Everett: :) Joe Everett: OK. Bye! Joe Everett: It's great. Thanks! Steve Law: From Nola: Thanks Janet!
