Goal: To provide professional development opportunities for librarians interested in college and research library issues. Objective: Plan and present one program at the ULA Fall conference This year, ACRL sponsored a program at the Fall conference in Logan, Utah, on October 24, 2003. This program, presented by ACRL Roundtable co-chair Wendy Holliday, was titled Designing & Evaluating Web-based Resources. This well-attended presentation provided an overview of several inexpensive usability techniques that can be used in site building, evaluating existing sites, or evaluating and customizing an existing product, such as an OPAC interface. Program materials were posted to the Web site on the ULA homepage. Objective: Plan and present at least one program at the ULA Annual conference This year, ACRL sponsored three programs at the Annual conference in Ogden, UT on May 5-7, 2004. A summary of the programs follows: Librarians Doing Research: Tips and Advice for Planning a Research Project (Friday, 10:30-11:30am) While librarians are experts at helping others do research, they often have to conduct research of their own. Whether designing a survey to determine program needs or conducting a focus group to assess service quality, librarians face many challenges in conducting research. Good research takes time and planning, often a luxury for librarians with competing duties. This session will provide an introduction to planning a research project. Topics include the ethical treatment of research subjects and Institutional Review Board approval, determining your research questions, and selecting an appropriate method. The Scholarly Communication Crisis: Setting an Agenda for Utahs Libraries (Thursday, 4-5pm) One of the gravest threats to universal access to information is the scholarly communication crisis. Subscription prices to scholarly journals, especially in the scientific, medical, and technical fields have been rising at a rate of about 9% a year. Since the mid-1980s, the average academic library's serials subscriptions have declined by 6%, hindering the flow of scholarly information. Join us for a discussion of the scholarly communication crisis in Utah. Three panelists wil outline what academic libraries have done to address the crisis to date. The remainder of the session will be devoted to a discussion of the future, setting an agenda for what Utah libraries can do now to address the crisis. Practical Applications of Assessment: Creating and Using Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (Friday 2:45-4:45) BUSINESS MEETING FOLLOWING 4:30-5:00 pm Information literacy is a critical component of education at every level. What are our students learning, and how well are they learning it? Academic and school information literacy instructors will present a practical overview of information literacy outcomes assessment planning and practices. This interactive session will enable participants to use the ACRL and AASL standards to prioritize learning outcomes. Participants will work in small groups to practice developing learning outcomes and assessment plans. Presenters will demonstrate how outcomes assessment data can be used to improve teaching and learning. Academic and school assessment planning models will be discussed. Attendees will become aware of information literacy assessment issues shared by school and academic librarians. Goal: To use the Web as a vehicle for publicizing the round table and increasing member involvement. Objective: Maintain the ACRL Round Table homepage (as part of the ULA homepage) with the intent to attract and educate association members about the round table This year the Web site was expanded to include a list of goals and objectives, current and past officers, meeting minutes, copies of current and past annual reports, archived news, ACRL Chapter topics, current and past officers, and a link to ACRL national. Objective: Publicize the times and locations of round table meetings in order to encourage any interested members to attend Members indicated that they would prefer to conduct Round Table business online, through email and the Web, so no formal face-to-face meetings were scheduled. Emails and Web announcements were sent out periodically asking for feedback on programming and documenting sponsored events. The Round Table Chair and Vice-Chair met twice during the year to discuss budgets, etc. for conference and workshop programs, and all discussion was disseminated to the membership via email. Email was the primary vehicle for correspondence for ACRL RT Officers. Objective: Record and publicize the minutes of each meeting Because business was conducted online, no formal meeting minutes were taken. Any relevant discussion was disseminated to the membership via email or posted to the Web site (see above). Objective: Develop a list of round table members for the website and include their job title and area(s) of expertise With the move of the ULA Web site to a commercial host, membership lists were automated, making them more up-to-date. A link was created from the Round Table site to the membership directory, with instructions for members illustrating how to filter results. Objective: Use Web-based forms to solicit feedback from members statewide to see how the roundtable can best serve their needs and interests An online form was posted to the ACRL RoundTable Web site to elicit member preferences for conducting round table business, and about any ideas you have for this coming year, including additional goals and objectives, conference or workshop programs, or improvements to the Web site. Goal: To create a smooth transition between outgoing and incoming officers and encourage involvement of the membership. Objective: Schedule a business meeting during the annual conference The business meeting was scheduled following the final Friday program. Objective: Correspond individually (in person, or via telephone or email) with new round table officers to discuss appropriate duties and responsibilities This year, email was the primary vehicle for correspondence for ACRL RT Officers. Objective: Publish ACRL Round Table annual report on the Web This annual report was published May 10, 2004 to the ULA ACRL RT Web site. Objective: Prepare a flyer to inform Annual conference attendees of ACRL Round Table programs Rather than prepare a flyer to announce ACRL programs, a list was prepared and posted to the Web site, with a follow-up email to ULA members. Goal: To insure continued activity of the round table. Objective: Present a slate of competent professionals for the ACRL round table election roster. ACRL RT officers will have a slate prepared by June, 2004, and posted to the Web site.
