Members of the Program Board planned, organized and helped present the 2006 Great Issues Forum, The Library Effect: Preparing Students for the 21st Century, featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Keith Curry Lance, was held on October 18 at the Salt Lake City Public Library. Dr. Lance and a panel of local experts from various disciplines within the education community led an audience-participation discussion. The panelists were Rep. Tim Cosgrove, District 44, Utah State Legislature; Carol Hansen, Professor and Instructional Services Librarian, Weber State University; Georgia Loutensock, Education Specialist, Utah State Board of Education; Lynnda Wangsgard, Director, Weber County Library System. The discussion was moderated by Nan Allsen, Media Coordinator, North Sanpete High School. Summary: Study after study documents the impact of robust school libraries and certified school librarians on student success. Yet many are being replaced by aides and clerical staff. At the same time, higher education and business have noted that students and workers often lack the skills required for success in college and the knowledge economy. The Great Issues Forum will explore the library effect, showing how librarians in school, public and academic libraries play a vital role in preparing students for the 21st century. Dr. Lance (via telephone) and Georgia Loutensock participated in a radio interview on KCPW about the forum on October 16, 2006. Invitations to the forum were sent out to local legislators, schools, government and education officials and public and academic libraries. The public was also invited to attend. Approximately 80 people attended the presentation and 50 or so went to the reception immediately following the forum.
