ULA award recipients for 1998 are:
Distinguished Service Award
Helene B. Fairchild, long time citizen advocate for libraries, has served Utah's libraries in many capacities. She has been active for many years in the Salt Lake City Library's friends group, serving as President of the Board at particularly critical times, during the illness and death of the long-time director Dennis Day, and during a formal challenge regarding an art exhibit at the Anderson Foothill branch library. Her "calm and considered approach when dealing with the press and the community created an environment of reason" during the latter public debate. Ms. Fairchild was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Friends of the Library USA (FOLUSA), well deserved position in recognition of her long-standing devotion to public libraries. Her additional activities range from service during the 1991 Governor's Conference on Libraries to more recent efforts to recreate a library for the Utah Governor's mansion. Several nominees noted her "conscientious dedication" to libraries and her committed service over many years. Most important, however, "her obvious love for books and libraries and her evident knowledge about books are invaluable assets" to the Utah Library community.
Librarian of the Year Award
Dan Barr, Director of the Murray Public Library, has served Utah's libraries truly effectively in his service as Chair of ULA's Legislative Committee. Nominations note his active work to increase the visibility among ULA members of the Association's legislative activities, his diligence in efforts to protect funding for the public library development grant program and his expertise in working between the Utah State Library, the library community and the legislature to help form an agenda for the Pioneer project to which all parties could agree and for which funding could be secured. Also noted was his hard work on the evaluation and selection of public libraries' Pioneer databases. "Utah libraries could have no more effective government relations spokesperson" says one nomination letter. "Dan has represented ULA professionally and maintained ULA's image among legislators as being a credible and conscientious organization and participant in the legislative process," notes another.
Distinguished Service to Paraprofessionalism Award
Caroljean Hanson is an outstanding representative of support staff. It was through her early leadership and loyal work years ago that paraprofessionals were finally recognized as vital, dedicated, and contributing members of the library family here in Utah. Through her vision of equal representation, attention was finally focused on paraprofessionals and certifications were awarded to those who made contributions to further the group as a highly trained, academically inclined, disciplined, and highly skills and knowledgeable group. Through the years she has demonstrated a continuing commitment to paraprofessionals through serving on various committees and a past president and as a contributing member of ULA. Caroljean has personal qualities such as great organizational skills, caring, listening, understanding, and basically going the extra mile that bring out the best in others. Her positive and dedicated attitude continues to inspire other support staff to strive for excellence.
Certificate of Achievement
Wendy Bishop graduated from BYU with a B.S. in Elementary Education in June of 1987, after which she served an 18 month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Santiago, Chile. Upon returning, she went to work at the LDS Church's Historical Department Library. With the help of a wonderful mentor she grew to love libraries. She worked in Technical Services for four years and Public Services for one year. In April 1995 Wendy accepted a Library Specialist position at the BYU Salt Lake Center and worked there for two years as the sole librarian as they automated their library. In December of 1996 Wendy chanted positions, moving to BYU and the Harold B. Lee Library to take a position as a copy cataloger. Wendy was awarded the ULA Certificate of Achievement in recognition of her education and skills she has acquired as well as the contributions she has made to libraries and librarianship.
