Librarian of the Year Award
Wanda Robinson is employed by Salt Lake County to serve as the librarian of the county's two jails,Metro and Oxbow. A nominating latter asserts, "Rarely is it possible to find an employee who immediatelyis able to adapt to the difficult jail environment, understand the inmate's attitudes and needs to develop a programmeeting the requirements of both the Sheriff and the inmates. Wanda is such an employee. She is cheerful and matter of fact in dealing with a violent, potentially dangerous clientele, and is persistent, efficient, and effective in her work. She has doubled the jail collection to 15,000 items, has formalized the library service, created a Reader's Advisory Service for trackingindividual inmate book requests, has read aloud to inmates, distributed poetry, and at Christmas timecreated a project to obtain copies of A Christmas Carol to distribute to over 1200 inmates. "Wanda sees the possibility in each man and woman in Salt Lake County Jail of learning a differentand better way of life through books," says another letter praising her efforts.
