Strategic Plan for the Utah Library Association 1996-2000 |
The mission of the Utah Library Association is to serve the professional developmentand educational needs of its members and to provide leadership and direction in developingand improving library and information services in the state.
Adopted 2/10/94
1. ULA will develop and fund a high profile public relations campaign to heighten theawareness of and support for librariess of all types throughout the state.
2. ULA will increase efforts and allocate resources to support effective legislativeaction on both the local and federal level for issues of importance to libraries. Prioritiesfor the next three years will include:
3. ULA will provide each new member with a packet of background information and supportmaterials to build awareness of association values and projects and encourage full participationin association activities.
4. ULA will develop a network of information and resources in both an electronic and paperform to support access to issues and ideas of importance for libraries.
1. ULA will maintain a strong and effective Intellectual Freedom Committee to provide leadership and support in the defense of first amendment principles. Chairs of the committee will befinancially supported in their efforts to improve understanding of the issues, build appropriateskills, and maintain strong ties throughout the state and the nation to effectively address the issues and support intellectual freedom in all types of libraries.
2. ULA will maintain a strong connection to national organizations which support intellectualfreedom such as the American Library Association and the Freedom to Read Foundation.
3. ULA will assess trends in intellectual freedom issues and provide regular programs and information to equip libraries to deal effectively with timely issues.
4. The Intellectual Freedom Committee will be charged with establishing and maintaining andelectronic listserv to build excellent communication and exchange of information on intellectualfreedom issues and conflicts throughout the state.
1. ULA will sponsor an annual conference and support at least two regional conferencesper year. Programs will be developed that address the needs and interests of all types of libraries.
2. ULA will develop a clearinghouse of learning opportunities available to members andregularly publish information in the newsletter and on-line.
3. ULA will provide funds to support first-time attendance at major national and regionalconferences.
4. ULA will offer at least one program at each annual conference to address issues of importance to the membership in financial planning, retirement, employment security, and law.
5. ULA will develop a mentor program to link experienced members with those new to librarianshipor the Association to provide support and information as needed.
1. ULA will develop and maintain an electronic listserv to facilitate communication, cooperation,and collaboration among libraries and library staff.
2. ULA will initiate and support statewide efforts to improve the working conditions for librarystaff.
3. ULA will regularly assess the interests and concerns of the membership to best respondto needs and identify opportunities for projects and programs.
1. ULA will use the newsletter, electronic communication, and conference programs to discussand inform ULA members of learning opportunities and resources available to effectively address changing technologies.
2. ULA will sponsor an annual program, such as A Great Issues Forum, separate from the regular conferences, to highlight and discuss pertinent issues of timely importance to the membership.
3. ULA will sponsor at least one program program at each annual conference to help members deal with the personal impact of change in our lives.
4. ULA will cooperate in the annual organization and production of an Information TechnologyFair to showcase new and emerging technologies and related equipment.
1. ULA will continue to cultivate strong and positive relationships with national and related library organizations such as ALA, MPLA, ARL, IFC, UELMA, and the Utah State Library.
2. ULA will develop an expanded network of library advocates to support local and statewideefforts to improve library service.
1. ULA will improve Association communication through the development and use of a World Wide Web home page, issue-related listservs, and the implementation of voice mail messaging forthe executive director and president of the Association.
2. ULA will provide a regular newsletter which is available and distributed in both electronicand paper formats for all members.
1. ULA leadership will ensure that regular opportunities for social activities are plannedthroughout the year and throughout the state to involve all members.
2. ULA will welcome new members with a newcomer's packet of information and in individualcontract to introduce new members to the Association.
1. ULA will implement the revised organizational structre and evaluate its effectivenesson a regular basis.
2. The incoming President of ULA will be responsible for updating and refining the ongoing strategic plan and ensuring that its directions are supported through the specific plans andprograms of the Association.
3. ULA will strive to maintain an appropriate and prudent fund balanace while ensuring levelsof expenditure that actively address Association priorities.
4. ULA will clearly meet all legal and financial requirements for a nonprofit organziation.
