Please write up a one page document (more if you have a very detailed committee) of your roles and responsibilities and attach to this form.

We are looking for your “wheel documentation” so no one else has to reinvent what you do.

Include:

        Time involved, details of activities you sponsor, resources you have used, templates for anything you do over and over every year. (certificates, forms, applications etc..)

         If you do a conference or program step-by-step instructions, so someone coming in cold would be able to replicate your efforts.

North Carolina Central University - School of Library and Information Sciences

North Carolina Central University is gearing up for the Spring 2014 semester.
The deadline for submitting applications for Spring 2014 to the School of Library and Information Sciences program is Friday, December 6, 2013.  If interested,  visit our website at http://www.nccuslis.org for more information. Most of the classes can be completed totally online.
There are also scholarships available through ALA for Library Science graduate students and also for Information Science graduate students through organizations such as NSF.
For those who may be interested in relocating to North Carolina for this program, we do offer some graduate assistantships that cover tuition (excludes fees) and provides a stipend. In order to qualify, you must first be accepted and admitted into the program. 
 

Emporia State Applications Open

The Emporia State University School of Library and Information Management is now accepting applications for the next student cohort to begin in January 2014 at the West Jordan Library. Anyone accepted into the upcoming cohort will receive a $500 Welcome Scholarship. The Emporia MLS program is the only one of its kind in Utah,  offering regularly-held face-to-face classes to provide personalized learning experiences. Classes are held approximately 12 weekends out of the year on Friday evenings from 5-9 and Saturdays from 9-5. The GRE is not required for admission. Please see the website for complete details and application information at slim.emporia.edu.

One of the most horrifying things about being in an earthquake is the realization that there is, literally, no such thing as "solid ground" on which to stand, and that you don't know how soon there will be. This is exactly the situation in which all participants in the scholarly communication environment currently find themselves. And here is the hard truth: it doesn't much matter whether libraries and publishers survive. What matters is that scientists continue to do their research and communicate the results effectively to their colleagues and the public. Libraries and publishers will (and should) survive to the exact degree that they make those two things possible. One upside of the current disruption is the way in which it makes new methods, approaches, and philosophies—some of which may have seemed unthinkable twenty or even ten years ago—not only thinkable today, but urgently needed.
Rick Anderson is the Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources and Collections at the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library. He earned his B.S. and M.L.I.S. degrees at Brigham Young University, and has worked previously as a bibliographer for YBP, Inc., as Head Acquisitions Librarian for the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and as Director of Resource Acquisition at the University of Nevada, Reno.  He serves on numerous editorial and advisory boards and is a regular contributor to the Scholarly Kitchen blog, as well as writing a regular column for Library Journal's Academic Newswire. His book, Buying and Contracting for Resources and Services: A How-to-Do-It Manual for Librarians, was published in 2004 by Neal-Schuman.  In 2005, Rick was identified by Library Journal as a “Mover & Shaker” – one of the “50 people shaping the future of libraries.”  In 2008 he was elected president of the North American Serials Interest Group, and he was named an ARL Research Library Leadership Fellow for 2009-10. He is a popular speaker on subjects related to the future of scholarly communication and information services in higher education.

With fall fast approaching, summer reading programs winding up, and hordes of returning students on their way, the staff of Utah Libraries News is planning a new issue. Please send your announcements, articles about programs, etc. to us at ulasubmissions@gmail.com. If you are a ULA committee chair or representative to other library organizations, send us a short update.
As the Utah Library Association grows, so too must the newsletter. To help gather news and content of interest to the ULA community, we’re adding to the volunteer staff:
