Spring 2003 Message from ULA President, Kayla Willey Dear ULA Members, It is hard to believe that a year has almost passed and my term as president of the Utah Library Association is coming to a close. At this time, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank every one of you for your participation in and support of ULA. I’d also like to applaud the Sections, Round Tables, and Committees this year for being extremely active and providing our ULA membership with an unprecedented number of gatherings and functions throughout the year. I think having a number of smaller group activities has helped make our organization more personal and has helped involve more people directly with ULA. Thank you, and hats off to those volunteers who went the extra mile to provide opportunities for greater participation in ULA and to those of you who came to the activities throughout the year. The Utah State Legislature made the first part of 2003 an interesting time for the Utah Library Association. As most of you are aware, Senate Bill 87 which changes the state county library laws passed through the Legislature. The Legislative Committee continues to work with the Utah Association of Counties to draft model county ordinances for adoption in each county as a result of the new state county library law. The good people who served this year on the Legislative Committee deserve your thanks, as they spent many hours in hearings, meetings, and negotiating with politicians. I would like to thank all who participated with the Legislative Committee this year, especially Britton Lund and Chip Ward, who did an outstanding job of guiding ULA through the legislative session this year. Finally, I would like to extend my most heartfelt gratitude to all of you who took the time to provide direct input to the Legislative Committee and to attend hearing sessions on Capitol Hill. As the year closes, I sincerely hope that each one of you will consider attending our Annual Conference May 7-9th in Sandy, Utah. The Conference Committee and Program Board has put together an outstanding program for you to enjoy. There is still time to register! Please take a peek at the Conference web page and come join us to “Catch the Big Information Fish @ Your Library!” Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your president this year. It has been a challenging, growing, and rewarding experience for me. I will always treasure this opportunity, the many good memories, and the friendship I enjoy with so many of you. Sincerely, Kayla Willey, President Utah Library Association Back to Top

Contact Utah's MPLA representative Peter Kraus MPLA AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT Nothing makes a library worker feel better than a heartfelt "thank you." Awards are our way to say "thank you'" to special staff members, volunteers and library supporters on a large scale. Please think about the people who make a difference in your library. It could be your creative and cheerful youth services staff or a helpful vendor who patiently explained how to operate the new microfilm reader/printers. What about the local legislator who took library issues to the state capitol or the local newspaper who always sent a reporter or photographer to the library for a story? These are the folks we'd like to see honored. Go to MPLA Award Information for an MPLA Award nomination form and further information. Nominations are accepted until August 22, 2003. Say thank you in a big way! Back to Top |
