Summer 2002 A message from new ULA President, Kayla Willey As many of you will soon discover, writing is not one of my passions or talents, but I am very excited about the Utah Library Association and the promise and prospects for the coming year. Please mark your calendars now for the annual conference, May 7-9, 2003 at the Southtowne Exposition Center in Sandy. The theme for the conference is “Catch the Big Information Fish @ Your Library”, meaning come to your library for the best information sources. Watch the newsletter for future “tackle tips” on the conference. The ULA Program Committee is also well under way on planning our Fall Conference which will be September 27, 2002 in Brigham City. It should be a good conference and I hope to see many of you there. One of my goals for this year is to make the ULA webpage an important and more interactive information resource for you all. To this end, a Website Review Task Force has been created and is actively working. We welcome your suggestions. Please feel free to contact any of the task force members before September. ULA also has a Calendar of Events on the webpage which we hope to keep up to date to help the membership be informed of activities, deadlines, and meetings. I’d also like you to feel like this is your organization. You are welcome to attend board meetings and suggest items for the agenda. The next board meeting is September 6, 2002 at the Utah State Library. Please feel free to email me at kayla_willey@byu.edu with ANY ideas or concerns. Kayla Willey ULA President Back to Top

NACO Funnel Project The ULA Technical Services Round Table is pleased to announce the formation of the Mountain West funnel. For those who may not know, a NACO funnel project is a group of libraries that have joined together to contribute name authority records to the national authority file. Frequently, funnel members create records in modest numbers, and consolidate their efforts to make a more significant contribution in terms of quantity. The Mountain West funnel will include any and all libraries in Utah who would like to participate. Participation is free and free training will be provided for those who become members of the funnel. Participation is an excellent way to enhance cataloger’s skills and it is a way to become part of the national voice that shapes cataloging policy. Anyone who is interested in becoming part of the Mountain West funnel should contact Rachel Wadham at: Rachel Wadham, Name Authorities Librarian, 6736 Harold B. Lee Library Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah 84602, Phone: 801-422-6780, Email: Rachel_Wadham@byu.edu. Our first training sessions will begin in August. Any interested participants should have a short application form filled out by that time. Additional training will be provided as necessary. Back to Top |
