President’s Message

Winter 2003
Message from ULA President, Kayla Willey
Dear ULA Members,
I hope you all enjoyed a very merry holiday season the past few weeks. It is hard to believe that a new calendar year is upon us again, but newness brings with it the anticipation of many exciting opportunities, challenges, and fresh pathways. I would urge you to take the opportunity at this time rejoin ULA for 2003 as memberships now expire every calendar year, and ULA has a lot of exciting activities planned for you. Print out a copy of the Membership Renewal Form and send it in.

The upcoming quarter will be an active time for the Utah Library Association. Our Legislative Committee has plans well underway for reminding the legislators that libraries need their continued support. It’s ULA election time and you will shortly be receiving ballots. The Round Tables and Sections continue to host many individual activities for their special interest areas. I would encourage you to consult the ULA calendar frequently so you don’t miss any events in your area of interest.

The ULA Annual Conference, “Catch the Big Information Fish @ Your Library” is fast approaching. I would encourage you to attend this year May 7-9 at the South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy, Utah. Take a look at the 2003 Annual Conference page. Registration forms will be available on the web this month! Among some of our guests at this year’s conference are the current President of the Association of College and Research Libraries and Joan Frye Williams.

As we look forward to this coming year, please take time to reflect on those of your colleagues who have been of service to the library community and nominate them for a ULA award. We often forget to say thank you enough, and we often think that someone else will take care of the nominating. If you think of a deserving individual, please take the initiative to make the nomination. There is awards information available, as well as contact information for the Awards Committee officers, at the Awards Committee page.

At this time I would like to thank each of you for your support of the Utah Library Association. Our profession faces many challenges in this Information Age and the cross fertilization of working with friends and colleagues like you gives us the strength to collectively conquer our challenges together.

I wish you a very productive and happy 2003.

Sincerely,

Kayla Willey, President
Utah Library Association

MPLA AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
Nothing makes a library worker feel better than a heartfelt "thank you." Awards are our way to say "thank you'" to special staff members, volunteers and library supporters on a large scale. Please think about the people who make a difference in your library. It could be your creative and cheerful youth services staff or a helpful vendor who patiently explained how to operate the new microfilm reader/printers. What about the local legislator who took library issues to the state capitol or the local newspaper who always sent a reporter or photographer to the library for a story? These are the folks we'd like to see honored.
Go to MPLA Award Information for an MPLA Award nomination form and further information. Say thank you in a big way!
