Reference Librarian

Utah Valley State College (Utah Valley University as of July 1, 2008) Library in Orem, Utah is seeking a librarian for a reference position.   The successful candidate will oversee the reference collection, provide instruction, and manage services within the library as assigned; provide professional reference service, patron teaching, and staff training; develop library collections to support student/faculty information needs in assigned subject areas; assist in the planning of library operations in our new 190,000 square foot library; and perform a variety of professional tasks including but not limited to library representation on various library, university and regional committees or task forces.

Minimum Qualifications  

Requires an MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school. Additional graduate study and/or professional experience in library science or related fields and computer-related library operations helpful.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

1. Aptitude and interest in library service, ability to work flexibly and creatively with students and faculty;
2. Aptitude and interest in formal instruction in a variety of settings as well as knowledge of information literacy theory;
3. Experience with various instructional strategies and techniques, including tools such as Blackboard Vista;
4. Experience in the evaluation and selection of print and non-print reference sources;
5. Experience with research databases used in libraries for information retrieval;
6. Knowledge of the use and content of reference sources, and experience matching user needs with appropriate resources;
7. Capacity to be self-directed, ability to meet deadlines, and commitment to responsive and innovative service;
8. Ability to learn and take responsibility for assigned areas within the library;
9. Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
10. Proficiency in the use of computers, peripherals, and software applications, such as the Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to assist patrons with their use;
11. Knowledge of current library and educational trends.

Library Instruction Program Coordinator

Weber State University*s Stewart Library seeks a librarian with vision, enthusiasm, and a strong service orientation to take a leadership role in the collaborative planning, development, and delivery of the library*s instruction program. The design of online instruction, both web-based tutorials and content modules, will be an important focus as the library seeks to enhance its already strong online instruction presence.

Responsibilities:

Provides vision and direction for the Library*s general and for-credit instruction program and serves as the Instruction Team Leader. Works closely with the Team to design and develop web-based tutorials and content modules. Collaborates with the Team and the University Librarian to plan, develop, and assess the general and for-credit library instruction needs of the campus. Coordinates and promotes instruction sessions. Serves as a resource person and sets an example for quality teaching. Collaborates with the Team to develop policies and procedures guiding the delivery and assessment of instruction. Participates in reference service, and may have some collection management/faculty liaison responsibility. Librarians have full faculty status and are expected to meet tenure and promotion requirements for research, publication, and service to the university and the profession.

Required qualifications:ALA-accredited MLS degree. Record of a strong commitment to information literacy instruction. Minimum of three year*s teaching experience in an academic library. Evidence of effective team leadership experience. Experience with creating Web-based instructional modules and multimedia. Evidence of participation in professional organizations.

Preferred qualifications: Ability to work successfully as a member of a team in a changing, innovative environment. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Experience with assessment of student learning. Experience providing reference service.

The Director of the library, a staff position, reports to the Provost.

The Director is responsible for planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating library operations, collection development, developing with the library staff and campus community a compelling vision for the library's future, and coordinating the work of the library with the learning activities of the rest of campus. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, innovative manager able to develop innovative strategies and programs--including library support for hybrid academic programs in collaboration with academic departments--and advance the library's role in promoting and deepening student learning.

Qualifications include a Master's degree from an ALA accredited library and /or information science program; a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible leadership in post-secondary, public, or corporate libraries; familiarity with the major issues facing libraries in higher education; excellent collaboration and communication skills; experience in integrating technology with traditional library resources and services; and experience in developing external funding. The staff includes eight FTE--four professional staff and four support staff-- and 15-20 work study student assistants.

The Giovale Library, completed in 1997, is a 50,000 square foot state-of-the art library and information services center. The collection presently includes 127,000 books, and 310 current journal subscriptions (with over 100 of these available electronically). Local access to other formats, including videos, DVDs, maps, microforms, and music CDs is available. Additionally, students have full text access to over 28,500 electronic journals and more than 54,000 electronic books via some 90 online electronic databases (most of which are available from off-campus via a proxy server). The Giovale Library has seating capacity for 290 people, group study areas, a multimedia classroom, media viewing areas, a computer lab, an information commons area were multiple students can work together, individual study carrels, all with wireless internet access.
