The Utah Library Association Awards Committee is pleased to announce the following recipients for the 2008 Awards:

Distinguished Service: Dianna Graff (Southern Utah University) nominated by Michael Freeman

Librarian of the Year: Susan Spicer (Salt Lake County Library Services) nominated by Kent Johnson

Special Recognition: Pete Giacoma (Davis County Library) nominated by Lora Koehler

Special Services: J C Stimson (Kanab City Library) nominated by Dicki Robinson

Join us Thursday, May 1 at 7 pm at the Salt Lake Hilton for the awards banquet honoring these very deserving colleagues. Sign up for the banquet is included in the ULA Conference registration online.

Several categories had multiple nominations, which made choosing just one person very difficult. Thank you to all who nominated these worthy individuals. Personally, I think all ULA members are winners!

My sincere thanks to Anita Albright of Salt Lake Community College for her expertise in helping with the awards committee again this year.

H. B. 135 – Grants From Department of Community and Culture includes $9 million for the Board of Directors of the Utah State Library, Utah Arts Council, the Museum Services Advisory Board, and the Board of State History. This bill includes about $2.7 million in grant dollars for Utah libraries and it requests the Utah State Library Board "submit a request to the Governor and Legislature for prioritized capital facilities grants."

This is not in the Governor's Budget, but USL has supplied and we are supplying information through our Department of Community and Culture, at the request of Representative Allen from Davis County. H.C.R. 3 - Concurrent Resolution - Declaring Love Your Library Week -- Clark, S http://le.utah.gov/~2008/htmdoc/hbillhtm/hcr003.htm

Please ask your legislator to sign the bill so the entire state can celebrate and recognize libraries during National Library Week this year.
