San Juan High School Library Fire
Monday, November 19, 2012
Dear Utah Library Community,
Many of you heard about the fire that destroyed the San Juan High School Library over the weekend. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson in relation to the incident. From what we understand, there is over $1 million dollars in damage and, of course, the community is shocked and dismayed.
As librarians, we are all deeply troubled by this news. Our thoughts and well wishes go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. The loss of a library cuts at the heart of a community. My thanks to everyone who has contacted me to ask what can be done to help. Your spirit of caring is outstanding!
ULA received an email from a student today who wrote, “I’m a senior at San Juan High School in Blanding, Utah. Friday night my high school's library got set on fire, and is a total loss. All the books, computers, printers, etc. were destroyed.” She was wondering if the ULA would be willing to donate or help in any way.
Knowing the broad generosity of Utah librarians, I feel comfortable answering this question with a sincere “yes”. I am working to contact the school to find out how we may be of assistance. As soon as I hear back from them, I will let you know the next steps we can take to help out with this situation.
