The Awards Banquet is a special event honoring those colleagues and friends who have been recognized by their peers. Ken Verdoia, Senior Producer at KUED will serve as the evening’s MC. Mr. Verdoia is a special friend of libraries: he currently sits on the board of the Salt Lake County Library System. He is also the recipient of more than one hundred regional, national, and international awards for journalistic and broadcast excellence and was honored in 1997 as the recipient of the Utah Humanities Council’s “Governor’s Award” for outstanding career achievement in the field of humanities. Please join us for this special evening event! The Banquet will be held in the Marriott Banquet Hall and outside courtyard (weather permitting). It will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 pm, with the banquet commencing at 7:30 pm. A cash bar will be available from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Distinguished Service Award Nancy Lombardo University of Utah Eccles Health Sciences Library Ms. Lombardo has worked cooperatively, tirelessly, and effectively to enhance library services and librarianship throughout the state, the region, and the world. Recently she revised and revitalized the Utah Academic Libraries Consortium – sponsored Internet Navigator online course, used to teach information literacy skills at multitype libraries in Utah and beyond. She has been able to persuade UALC directors to continue to fund the project year in and year out and to get librarians from all of Utah’s academic institutions to participate in this project. Ms. Lombardo has led the Utah Library Association Web team in a streamlining and updating of the ULA website. The website is now an excellent resource for all Utah librarians thanks to Nancy’s vision, leadership, and hard work. The Mountain Plains Library Association recently honored her with their Board Choice Award, recognizing her high potential for as a future library leader. She has also worked with Kenning Arlitsch of the University of Utah’s Marriot Library on a project to provide medical libraries in Cyprus, Bulgaria Nepal, Macedonia, and Belarus with access to the PubMed Loansome Doc document delivery system. This pioneering effort is critical to international development in these areas providing high speed and low cost access to previously unavailable health literature. At the Eccles Library, Ms. Lombardo oversees the Systems department, managing the digital video studio, coordinating the Internet Navigator, developing and teaching classes, contributing to the development of the library’s web server, among other duties. A part of the library world since 1981, she previously worked at the University of New Mexico, Dartmouth College, Denver Public Library, and Salt Lake Public Library. She received her MLS from Emporia State University in 1994. Ms. Lombardo is one of ULA’s greatest fans and advocates. She has presented a program at almost every ULA conference in the past 5 years. Her commitment to creative and innovative initiatives, her willingness to share her expertise in new technologies, her inspiring teaching, her international impact on librarianship, and her constant collaboration make her a natural choice for this award. Librarian of the Year Award Diana Graff Dean of Library Services, Southern Utah University Dr. Diana Graff has provided exceptional service to the public and academic library users of southern Utah for over twenty years. Her vision and expertise have extended to city, school, and university librarianship, and her influence has been felt at home and abroad. Her personal love of books and passion for librarianship has fueled a training program that has produced hundreds of School Library Media Specialists. Through funding crises and administration reshuffling, Dr. Graff has tenaciously supported training for librarians through the Library Media Minor and Certification Program at SUU. Graduates have worked in schools all over the country from Georgia to Alaska. In Cedar City, Dr. Graff is currently a member of the Cedar City Library Building Steering Committee, whose work was recently rewarded with overwhelming approval of a $6 million bond to build a new library. She oversaw the planning, design, building and move to the new Gerald R. Sherratt Library on the campus of SUU. She was an effective leader in highlighting the inadequacies of the former library and the need for a new structure. Under her guidance, the library has undergone continuous technological upgrading, library hours have been dramatically lengthened, the collection of books and periodicals has been significantly expanded, and the entire library program elevated to a new level. Dr. Graff has been an able spokesperson for the smaller college and university libraries in Utah. No small part of the success of the Utah Academic Library Consortium (UALC) is due to her contributions. The breadth of her influence and tireless efforts in benefiting Utah’s Libraries makes Diana Graff a natural choice for Librarian of the Year. Special Service to Libraries Award Terry Hutchinson Trustee, Washington County Library Terry Hutchinson is a strong and vocal supporter of the Washington County Library System. He is a sterling example of a concerned citizen who is passionate about libraries. As a member of the Washington County Library Board of Trustees since 1996, Mr. Hutchinson provided tremendous support for the $23 million dollar library bond that passed in the most recent election. He volunteers his expertise in legal matters to offer free legal counseling and advice to the library and its patrons. He is a frequent voice on local radio, hosting the daily program “Bookmarks with Terry Hutchinson,” a discussion of books and library-related issues. Mr. Hutchinson is always willing to stand on the front lines to solve problems and find resolutions. He has been willing and eager to listen to concerns of staff members, and to actively participate in decision-making to strengthen the Washington County Library system. He is always there to ask “How can I help?” You don’t have to convince Mr. Hutchinson how important libraries are to the community. He will be more than able to convince you with his passion born of years of dedication and service to his library. Mr. Hutchinson stands as an example of what a committed Board Member should be. Mr. Hutchinson is a partner in the law firm of Dixon, Truman, Fisher & Hutchinson. Special Recognition Award Evan Baker Uintah County Library Mr. Baker has been the director of the Uintah County Library for nearly 20 years. During that time, his propensity for innovation and his unceasing promotion of library service in the eastern part of the state has been constant. His development of a rotating collection of video and audio tapes for libraries in the region is just one example. Mr. Baker has provided much support for the Uintah County Bookmobile Library in its struggle to serve the more isolated residents of the region. (Support which extended beyond words: Evan helped move the Bookmobile Library to its new location in Duchesne. And through his efforts, the Regional History Center has remained in the Uintah County Library, and his close working relationship with the director, Doris Burton, has created a unique resource for local area information. Mr. Baker’s work with ULA has been exemplary. He has been chair of the audio visual roundtable, ULA recording secretary, and is currently a ULA Board Member at Large, in which position he has steadfastly worked on such issues as nominations and institutional membership. It is no secret that Mr. Baker has been one of ULA’s most active members in spite of health problems and his library’s distance from Utah’s population centers. He has seldom missed a ULA board meeting, has been a regular at ULA conferences, and a genial and helpful host for two ULA Fall workshops. Mr. Baker has served three terms on the LSCA Advisory Council from 1990 – 1996, representing small public libraries, and is a member of the Children’s Literature Association of Utah. The strength and continuing viability of the Utah Library Association rests with members who have the commitment, vision, and desire to work hard beyond the already large requirements of providing library service as part of their job and into the challenging arena of making libraries a part of their life. ULA Governor’s Award for the Promotion of Reading Sondra Jolovich-Motes Principal, Mountain View Elementary School, Ogden Catherine Montgomery Principal, Lewis Elementary School, Ogden Donna Corby Principal, Dee Elementary School, Ogden In the fall of 1997, three principals from the Ogden City School District joined together to brainstorm ways in which to improve literacy in their schools. All three schools have high rates of poverty, are located in a nationally designated “Enterprise Zone”, have a highly mobile population and a large percentage of LEP/NEP students. Catherine Montgomery, Sondra Jolovich-Motes and Donna Corby looked at the “Seven Correlates of Effective Schools” research and the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSRD) models and began the change process in their schools. Teams of teachers representing the three schools had the opportunity to visit different CSRD models and share their findings and insight with their respective faculties and staffs. With the goal being to improve literacy skills and to have all students reading at or above grade level by the end of the third grade, “Success for All” (SFA) was selected as the model at all three sites as it met the literacy needs of all of their students. Working as a triad was important to these three faculties because they would be leading the change process in the Ogden City School District. In an unprecedented display of collaboration, the three principals wrote for the CSRD grant as a team. For the past four years, they have continued to work as a consortium focusing their staff development on meeting the needs of their students, staff, parents and community. Working together they are beginning to impact multi-generational illiteracy in their communities. Based on the success of these three schools effectively working together, seven additional Ogden City Schools have implemented the same CSRD models. Mrs. Sondra Jolovich-Motes has been at Mountain View Elementary School for six years. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Weber State University and a Master of Education from the University of Utah Mrs. Catherine Montgomery has been at Lewis Elementary for the past seven years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Utah State University. Dr. Donna Corby received her bilingual certification and her ESL endorsement from San Diego State University. She has taught in schools on the Mexican border and in Harlem, New York. Donna received her Master of Arts from SDSU and her Ed.M. and Ed.
