ULA Fall Workshop & BBW

  • This week is Banned Books Week. Don't forget to promote the freedom to read in your communities! ala.org/bbooks & bannedbooksweek.org
  • On Thursday, September 27, Wanda and DaNae attended a meeting of Davis County School District secondary media specialists where they had been invited to train attendees on basic principles of intellectual freedom. Unfortunately, they were disrespected and not allowed to even finish their presentation. Both left quite upset.
  • On Friday, September 28, Wanda, Joseph, Shawn, and DaNae attended the ULA Fall Workship in Springville. They presented "Selection vs. Censorship" during the 1:30 session with Joseph and Shawn covering the Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement, DaNae speaking on selection and censorship, and Wanda closing with information about challenges and policies. The presentation was well-received and the Committee heard many positive comments.
  • The Committee then held an impromtu meeting with Adriane (ULA President) and Trish (ULA Vice President) about the Davis County School District issue. The response received on Thursday was related. Wanda is again talking with the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom about our options. Support for DaNae was reiterated.

Banned Books Week & Reporting a Challenge to ALA

With Banned Books Week coming up (SEP 30 - OCT 6), we thought it was a good time remind everyone about reporting challenges to ALA.
"Since 1990, the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom has maintained a confidential database on challenged materials. ALA collects information from two sources: newspapers and reports submitted by individuals. All challenges are compiled into a database. Reports of challenges culled from newspapers across the country are compiled in the bimonthly Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom; those reports are then compiled in the Banned Books Week Resource Guide. Challenges reported to the ALA by individuals are kept confidential. In these cases, ALA will release only the title of the book being challenged, the state and the type of institution (school, public library). The name of the institution and its town will not be disclosed. A list of most frequently challenged books is compiled from these challenges for each annual  Banned Books Week.
To report a challenge, please submit an Online Challenge Database Form. Alternately, you can print the Challenge Database Form (PDF), complete it, and fax it to the Office for Intellectual Freedom, at 312-280-4227."

Upcoming Presentations

The committee met on Facebook July 26 and discussed future plans, including presenting at the August 9 Cache Valley Library Association meeting in Logan and at the September 28 ULA Fall Conference in Springville after being invited by the Continuing Education Committee.

Past & Future Meetings

At our meeting last week we met one of our newest members, DaNae Leu, and she gave us a unique insight into the Davis County School District situation. We also discussed our non-conference budget proposal and preparing for upcoming intellectual freedom training sessions that we hope to have in the near future.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, July 26 at 10:00 AM at the Logan Library.

Meeting

Committee Meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 28, 10 am, Logan Library.

No Statement At Present

At Wanda's direction, ULA has decided to hold off issuing a statement about the Davis County School District issue until more information is forthcoming. Wanda is working to meet with the key players and hopes for a satisfactory solution for all involved.

Executive Board Meeting

The ULA Executive Board, Wanda and Joseph from the IF Committee, Shay from the School Library Section, and Donna from the Utah State Library met at the Day-Riverside Library to discuss an official statement regarding the Davis County School District issue. A draft was composed and it is expected to be finalized soon.

Board of Directors Meeting

Wanda and Joseph attended the quarterly meeting of the ULA Board of Directors at the new West Jordan Llibrary where the Davis County School District issue was discussed. It was decided that an emergency meeting of the ULA Executive Board plus representatives from the Intellectual Freedom Committee and the School Library Section would meet again on Monday, June 11 to further discuss the situation and work on an official statement from ULA.

Book Challenge

We are monitoring the recent challenge to a children's book in the Davis County School District (see Salt Lake Tribune 5/30/12 and 6/1/12).

2012 Conference & Call for Members

The Intellectual Freedom Committee was honored to host celebrated banned book author Chris Crutcher at the annual conference. As the luncheon speaker, and in an emotionally charged session following, he described how books could provide healing and understanding to readers. The charge for us was not to just allow access to a variety of materials, but to help young people find books to face their challenges. We thank ULA for their tremendous support. At this time we are taking applications for the 2012-2013 Intellectual Freedom Committee.  If you are interested in being on the committee for the first time or if you would to re-apply for this year please send an e-mail to the committee Chair or Vice-Chair listed below.
